Pixel Desk Mouse
A multi functional input device for the Pixel Desk
Pixel 1 World // Pixel Hub // Pixel Desk // Pixel Mouse // Pixel Keyboard // Pixel Book // Pixel VR // Pixel VR Controller
Unlimited Control
The Desk Mouse is not a regular mouse. It has regular laser operated motion sensors as regular computer mouses, but the Desk Mouse is a state of the art input device. Less, but better is the device of the design. The Desk Mouse is a solid wireless sculptural product that offers unlimited control over your system.
Touch Sensitive Fabric
The top of the Pixel Mouse is wrapped in a touch sensitive fabric, Jacquard by Google that consists of conductible textile fibers and allows multi-touch gestures on textile surfaces. The color is light grey and follows an unobtrusive integrative design language.
Gesture Control
The Pixel Mouse is designed to encourage users to use touchless gesture control for a faster and more intuitive interaction with the android OS and certain apps. Soli is a sensing technology developed by Google, that uses radar for motion tracking and detects gestures of the human hand.
Deep Press Technology
The reduced design of the Pixel Mouse and the usage of Jacquard textile leads to the decision to delete buttons from the mouse. Android for mobile phones does not include a left and right touch and context menus can be accessed in other ways. The Deep Press Technology by Google can differenciate between a touch and a press gesture on a touchsensitive surface. A button like click feeling can be imitated by a small motor under the surface.
Wireless Charging
The Pixel Mouse does not come with any usb ports or exchangeable batteries. It can only be charged wirelessly on the Pixel Desk stand.
Colors
Beside dark and light grey, the colors for mouse and keyboard are accompanied by two more colors, a fresh yellow and a playful orange.
Market Research
Before starting with any project, I make an extensive market research on project related technology and interesting design solutions. Leapmotion for example uses gesture control since a few years in a couple of devices to interact with virtual reality, and Manhatten builds a button free computer mouse.
I use Pinterest for inspiration and start my design process with pen on paper.
Concept Development
Simplicity puts the designer’s attention to details. In a first step of concept development I design a couple of rough shapes to experience the appeal of shapes, isolated and in combination with for example the Keyboard and the Pixel Desk.
