Upgrade
The design is leaned on the current Daydream controller as a rudimentary system controller to access Android and navigate through applications and simple games. This design includes an additional button at the front and an optional strap to hold on the user’s hand.
Equipment
The controller is equipped with a magnetic notch that allows users to add additional equipment to the controller or attach the controller to any product that fits the notch. Users can add an elastic strap, as shown in the animation, or connect two controller to a full gaming controller. This opens a hole new market for third party manufacturers.
Concept Development
I brainstored a lot about what is actually needed for a VR, that is not primarily a gaming device. the current Daydream controller is perfect for simple navigation through simple games and menus and the formal language of the device is very googley. The downside is that the controller is unsuitable for sophisticated VR gaming which led to the idea to have two mirrow symmetric controller (also suitable for left and right handed users) that can be combined to one gaming controller or used like standard VR controller not unlike Oculus or VIVE controller.
Design Development
I wanted to add a trigger button to the controller to make it more suitabel for sophiticated gaming and designed a couple of shapes that would ergonomicly approach the needs of an additional button.
I created a couple of designs to make the connect-two-controller-design happen but eventually decided to go with a simple modular system with two notches for add-ons at the buttom of the controller.
